It all started...

As many stories do, with a D+ in thermodynamics. Alright, maybe just this one. Penji cofounder Ben Holmquist looked around for help but found nothin’. The scene was UC Davis, 2015 - shouldn’t there be someone to sit down with? What about older students?

Cofounder Ricardo Matsui, on the other hand, was a computer science whiz kid with a penchant for helping classmates. Both Ricardo and Ben saw huge potential in a simple fact:

Students teach each other incredibly quickly.

Big lectures, crowded office hours... it all seems so inefficient. Students don't have anyone to actually teach them, and that sucks. We believe that learning from the right peers can propel you to the top of the pack in college and make all the difference as you move on to what's next.

Penji is simply a bridge connecting students, but we believe it has the power to change the DNA of higher education. The concept gets stronger with every student that joins, so go grab the app and pitch in.

What's with the Penguin?

First, his name is Penji and he likes to be addressed directly.

Second, penguins take care of each other. He’s come all the way from the antarctic to teach us humans how to do the same.

Thanks, Penji.
